Adult and Children Vision Care

Eye ChartRegardless of what stage of life you are in, an annual eye exam with a licensed optometrist is necessary to protect your vision, just as important as annual physical exams or routine teeth cleanings. Eye conditions are best minimized and corrected through early detection; and current technology offers patients many innovative solutions without the invasive procedures used in the past.

Children

"One in four school aged children has an undiagnosed vision problem that interferes with learning" according to the Vision Council of America. Children's eyes are almost fully developed by age nine and can be aided or trained as early as six months. When vision problems occur, the child may find difficulty in reading or identifying letters, numbers and symbols to fully integrate the basic fundamentals of education. Potentially treatable problems often cause children to be labeled as dysfunctional or "slow" so these problems can and should be detected prior to full ocular development. While your child may appear to see perfectly well, you cannot be certain without a professional vision exam since school vision screenings only detect about 20 to 30 percent of all eye problems. To ensure your child maintain the best vision possible for the rest of his/her life, you should schedule a professional exam every year beginning at age three.

Adults

As adults, our hand-eye coordination becomes imperative for such everyday tasks as driving, reading, athletic and occupational activities yet we take our vision for granted. Several factors affect our vision throughout the day, such as poor lighting, UV light rays, work hazards and routine exposure to computers. The Vision Council of America estimates that "more than 10 million Americans suffer serious vision and health problems as a result of computer usage."   Annual eye exams help detect and monitor the effects of a lifetime of eye strain, improper lighting and hereditary conditions. They can also help identify serious medical conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes.

As we age, quality of vision gradually diminishes. Annual exams help monitor the affects of aging which is critical for adults over the age of 40 who are at a much greater risk for glaucoma, cataracts and other sight-stealing diseases. Early detection can help protect your vision.

The Exam

A comprehensive vision eye exam should be an integral part of your health care routine. Through an extensive training process and ongoing continuing education, optometrists can help preserve and improve your eyesight. By utilizing a variety of instruments in conjunction with diagnostic eye drops, at Northcenter Eye Care exams test your eyes for the following:

  • Distance vision
  • Focus capabilities
  • Ability to use both eyes for integrated vision
  • Vision conditions (nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, etc.)
  • Eye diseases such as macular degeneration, glaucoma and cataracts.
